The Walton County Sheriff's Office is launching its annual Operation Blue Bird initiative on Tuesday, August 11, as students head back to class for the new school year, with the campaign lasting until August ends. Deputies will increase patrols in school zones and along bus routes during morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal, watching for speeding, distracted driving, illegal passing of stopped buses, shoulder passing and seat belt or child restraint violations. Sheriff Michael Adkinson said the goal is to protect children and encourage drivers to slow down and stay focused. The office is asking motorists to leave earlier, avoid distractions, obey posted speed limits, watch for crossing guards and students, and always stop for school buses as required by law.
